Raised An Army, Built a Fort and Never Fought a Battle – Captain Greene Part Two

Captain Joseph Greene was my 6th Great Grand Father and the Father of Major William Marion Greene.  It can be said, that the army and the conflicts during the French & Indian Wars, Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 was an active part of the Greene family.

Joseph Greene was born in 1715 to 1726 in Rhode Island.  Most resources say that he was born in 1715 but there are a few resources that claim 1726 as his birth year.  He was a farmer in North Carolina, when the French and Indian conflicts started.   The people were terrified of the Native Americans in what the Natives would do to the Colonist during the war.  A group led by Samuel Corbin was established to protect the Catawba area.

Joseph joined the militia in 1747 to 1750, under Captain Corbin.  Here again there multiple sources show that 1750 is the favored date the group was established.  In the picture below, you can see where Joseph Green(e) was one of the forty eight men in the militia.

The action was to build a fort to protect the area of South Fork and the Catawaba rivers.  The fort was built and never saw military action during the French & Indian war.  The people were never attacked by the Cherokee people.  So, an army raised, a fort built and no action by anyone.  Better safe than sorry.  In those days, a mistake could cost you your life and everyone in your families lives.

Joseph would be trained and work as ranger.  A Ranger was known to be able to travel lite, track the enemy, and was often used by the British as scout during the War.

Joseph remained with the militia and would be given the rank of Captain during 1770.
